Mulan premieres on Disney Plus Sept. 4, but will it ever be available on Blu-ray and DVD?

The live-action adaptation of Mulan is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Will fans ever be able to own it on Blu-ray or DVD? Here’s what we know!

The COVID-19 outbreak has interrupted everyone’s plans, including Hollywood! After having its big-screen premiere delayed, Disney has decided to debut Mulan on Disney Plus for the price of $30. It’s a surprising decision as this is the first major picture that will be testing the straight-to-streaming waters.

How will it do? Sources are predicting that Mulan will be just fine and even make some profit, but we’ll keep you posted with actual numbers once the movie is out. But what about those who don’t want to watch it on the streaming service or want to own it longer?

Is Mulan coming to Blu-ray and DVD?

After a lot of debating behind doors, Disney made the decision to stream the movie on its service Disney Plus for $30. Is it worth it? It all depends on you!

For $30, you can watch the movie as many times as you want as long as you have Disney Plus. If you cancel Disney Plus, you won’t have access to the movie. In my opinion, this is why it’s better to just own the movie on Blu-ray.

This is a pretty good week for Ultra HD Blu-ray with five new titles arriving on Tuesday, September 1. First up we have Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988) releasing to a 4k Blu-ray gift set, standard 4k Blu-ray, and 4k SteelBook edition. Also from the eighties, The Goonies (1985) from director Richard Donner also arrives on 4k Blu-ray in several editions including an exclusive gift set with maps, patch, and special treasure chest packaging.

Arrow Video’s restoration of Pitch Black starring Vin Diesel is finally arriving on 4k Blu-ray after getting pushed back several weeks (the newly restored Blu-ray edition is already in stock). And, both Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have been upraded to Ultra HD Blu-ray.

New Movie & TV Show Releases on Blu-ray, Tuesday, Aug. 25

The US government has busted a group of movie pirates who are said to be responsible for leaking “nearly every movie released by major production studios”.

Federal prosecutors claim three men based in Norway, the UK and the US ran a copyright infringement group called The Sparks Group, with which they pirated movies and TV shows for nine years.

According to indictments that were unsealed on Tuesday (August 25), Umar Ahmad, George Bridi, and Jonatan Correa, among others, “successfully reproduced and disseminated hundreds of movies and television shows prior to their retail release date, including nearly every movie released by major production studios”.

The group have been charged with copyright infringement, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Bridi is also charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to transport stolen property interstate, the sentences for which are 20 years and five years in prison respectively. Bridi was arrested in Cyprus and prosecutors are looking to extradite him to the US to stand trial. Correa was arrested in Kansas, while Ahmad is still at large.

The documents allege that the men fraudulently obtained DVDs and Blu-Rays ahead of release by creating a front organisation to be sent discs given to the media and members of the industry by distributors in Manhattan,

That’s not to say that there’s absolutely nothing coming out on DVD in September. TV fans will continue to have their hands full with box sets of new seasons of everything from Bull to Young Sheldon to Supergirl. We’ll also see a few recent movies, like First Cow, which was one of the many films that saw its theatrical release squashed by the pandemic, and the well-received HBO movie Bad Education.  If there’s a highlight to the September release schedule, however, it may be the underseen horror movie Blood Quantum, which is worth checking out. 

If you’re looking for some classic movies to revisit. September sees new Blu-ray and UHD releases of everything from Full Metal Jacket to Roman Holiday. It’s also the 20th anniversary of Battlefield Earth, so do with that what you will.
